🌍 Interpreting at COP28: Supporting Hungarian Businesses on the Global Stage
In December 2023, world leaders, innovators, and organisations gathered in Dubai for COP28 — the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference.
It was an event that brought together thousands of people, all focused on one shared mission: finding solutions for a sustainable future.
For me, as a professional Hungarian–English interpreter, it was an honour to be part of that experience — supporting Hungarian business delegates and industry representatives in meetings, presentations, and international discussions throughout the event.
💬 Giving Hungarian Voices a Global Platform
During COP28, I provided interpreting for several Hungarian businesses and sustainability-focused organisations attending the conference.
These included meetings with international investors, environmental agencies, and innovation partners, where precision, timing, and cultural understanding were key.
My role was to ensure that every message — from business proposals to technical presentations — was communicated clearly and confidently to an international audience.
Interpreting at such a large-scale event required more than language fluency.
It demanded adaptability, diplomacy, and a deep understanding of both the technical and cultural context of each conversation.
🌿 Interpreting in an International Environment
The COP28 venue at Expo City Dubai was a hub of global collaboration, with dozens of languages being spoken at once.
Each day, I worked in diverse settings — from private B2B meetings and roundtable discussions to public sessions and networking events.
The challenge wasn’t just about switching between Hungarian and English.
It was about adjusting to the rhythm of each participant — scientists, policymakers, and entrepreneurs — ensuring that ideas were shared accurately, respectfully, and effectively.
It was an inspiring reminder of how language can empower progress — by connecting people who share a goal but not a native tongue.
✨ Professionalism Under Pressure
Large conferences like COP28 move fast. Sessions run back-to-back, and there’s little room for hesitation.
In those moments, preparation and professionalism make all the difference.
Before each interpreting session, I familiarised myself with each organisation’s background, industry terminology, and objectives — from renewable energy technology to circular economy solutions.
That preparation allowed me to deliver interpreting that was both accurate and meaningful, ensuring Hungarian delegates could present their ideas with confidence.
🌍 Reflection: Communication as Climate Action
COP28 wasn’t just a conference about climate — it was about collaboration.
And collaboration starts with communication.
As an interpreter, I was proud to play a small but essential role in helping Hungarian voices be heard in global discussions about sustainability, innovation, and the future of our planet.
At ENIKOTRANSLATES, I continue to support professionals and organisations who want to make their message understood — wherever they are in the world.
